Controversy of Hinduism and its Involvement in Indian Government
The rights described in articles 25, 26, 27 and 28 of the Indian constitution, enacted in 1949, grant the citizens of India with the right to freedom of religion. The 42nd Amendment of the Constitution of India, enacted in 1976, declared India a secular nation. As a secular nation, every citizen of India has the right to follow any religion they so choose. Though many religions are practiced, over 80.5% of the population practices Hinduism.
The Hindu religion combines spiritual teachings and ancient philosophies that influence not only culture but the politics of India as well. Hindu nationalism is believed to be the most significant among the current political movements in India today. Opposition would argue that most Hindu nationalists, also known as the , reject the idea of secularism and instead support Hindutva, the ideology that defines Indian culture and politics based on the ideals created from Hinduism.

However, as of 2014 the Bharatiya Janata party is the country's largest political party in terms of representation in the Indian national parliament.
