Concordia International School Shanghai Model United Nations
The Concordia International School Shanghai Model United Nations (CISSMUN) is a three-day simulation of the United Nations taking place each January on the campus of Concordia International School Shanghai. The goal and mission of CISSMUN is to provide a venue in which students of diverse backgrounds can hone the skills of research, public speaking and negotiation while cultivating the virtues of ACTIVE global citizenship and principle-centred leadership.
From its inception in 2010, the conference has grown from a few dozen students (all drawn from the host school) to a gathering of 500 high school students from around the world. During the conference itself, students role-play as delegates of assigned member states in the various committees of the United Nations, and work together in a formal setting to posit solutions to some of the economic, social and political problems confronting the international community.
Each year, topics are chosen for the CISSMUN conference in relation to a central theme. Past CISSMUN themes include The Peace Imperative, Responsibility to Protect and, most recently, Shaping our Demographic Destiny. The theme of the 2015 conference will be The Challenge of Inequality. The CISSMUN conference is part of a constellation of Model UN conferences affiliated with The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN).
