Cracked.com (2010–2017)
Johnston joined Cracked.com around 2010, working in a multi-disciplinary role that included writing, video production, editing, animation, and visual effects. During this period, he contributed to the site's expansion into online video content and appeared in several of its productions.
He made recurring supporting appearances in the scripted comedy series After Hours, alongside cast members Michael Swaim, Daniel O'Brien, Soren Bowie, and Katie Willert. He also co-starred in The Start-Up with Swaim and Katy Stoll.
In May 2017, Johnston launched Some News, a short-form topical news segment for Cracked's YouTube channel in which he delivered weekly headlines with a satirical and increasingly exasperated tone.
On December 4, 2017, Johnston was among the 25 staff members laid off when Cracked's then-parent company, the E. W. Scripps Company, cut the website's video department.
Independent work and Some More News (2018–present)
Following the layoffs, Johnston and producer Katy Stoll launched an independent continuation of Some News through crowdfunding on Patreon, relaunching the series as Some More News in early 2018.
The independent series evolved into a long-form video essay format focusing on politics, systemic issues, and media criticism. Episodes typically feature extended monologues combining humor with research-driven analysis.
In 2018, Some More News and its companion podcast Even More News were distributed through podcast networks and online platforms.
Podcasting
Johnston co-hosts the weekly news and commentary podcast Even More News with Katy Stoll, which launched in 2018 alongside the YouTube series.
He also co-hosted the podcast Worst Year Ever with Stoll and journalist Robert Evans. The show focused on political developments and major global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 United States presidential election.
Style and themes
Johnston's work is characterized by long-form satirical commentary that focuses on politics, media narratives, and systemic issues. His presentation style combines humor with detailed research and often adopts an increasingly exasperated tone when addressing contemporary events.
