Coco Cachalia
Coco Cachalia (born December 31, 1957) is a South African businesswoman and prominent figure among women in the country.
Personl Life
Cachalia has born to legendary political fighters, Yusuf and Amina Cachalia in 1957. She attended Waterford College in Swaziland for one year before moving to England where she attended Putney GHS. She later attended University of the Witwatersrand and University of Essex. In 1980, she married Ahmed Essop. They are presently married with two sons. Cachalia has also been arrested before for political activism during the apartheid regime.
Career
Cachalia was a member of the Labour & community Project SA Com for Higher Education from 1986 To 1989. She was also director of The Learn and Teach Publication from 1990 to 1992. She then became a media consultant for Cachalia Communication from 1992 to 1996. After that she was appointed as Managing Director for Kagiso TV a company striving to produce educational TV in South Africa. She later became CEO of the company, after her partner retired. Cachalia is known for taking on such a small company and turning it into a multi million Rand company. Cachalia also served as a member of The Cricket World Cup committee from 2001 to 2003. Cachalia has also been featured in the who's who sa. She was also named by the Mail & Guardian as one of South Africa's most prominent women in the category of media.
Published Works
Cachalia has published two books, Long Walk to Freedom where she was the writer and editor of abridgement of official book and Social History of the Labour Movement where she was the author.
Awards
The Japan Broadcasting Corporation awarded Cachalia the Japan Prize in 1997.
