Cobham Sports and Social Club
Cobham Sports and Social Club is a members club in Merley, Dorset. It was opened on the 4th September 1971 by Sir Alan Cobham, under the name Flight Refuelling Sports and Social Club.
Facilities
The club includes sports facilities such as a nine hole golf course, 2 football pitches, a cricket square, squash courts, skittle alley and Pétanque.
The Skittle Alley can be booked, along with other rooms in the club (Hall, Conference Room, Merley Room) for functions. A licensed bar and a selection of different food menu's are available. Bar extensions can be arranged, so closing time is at 23.30 instead of 23.00. Every Sunday between 12:00 and 14:00 is a 3 course carvery lunch and takes place in the Merley Room (booking is advised). Also on the first Friday night of the month is quiz night, attracting approximately 75 members that book in advance each time. On the first Sunday evening of the month, there is a poker night.
Annually, there is a country music and western festival held on the fields, with those at the festival allowed access to the club's bar, hall and catering facilities. In 2008, the festival was supposed to run from the 17 - 21 July. However, due to lack of interest, the festival was cancelled.
Wimborne District Society of Model Engineers
There is also a model steam train track, run by enthusiasts from the Wimborne District Society of Model Engineers (WDSME). There are many open days throughout the year where visitors can have rides. The members meet on Sunday mornings for a chat and a cup of tea and to do some maintenance.
Flight Refuelling Amateur Radio Society
The Flight Refuelling Amateur Radio Society (FRARS) takes place on the grounds every Wednesday and Sunday. FRARS membership includes access to the Cobham Sports and Social Club.
Rotary International
Every Wednesday evening, the Ferndown Rotary meets at the club in the Merley Room. The evening starts at 6.30pm, with a 2 course meal (main and desert) from 7pm. The evening usually finishes between 9.00 and 9.30pm.
Spring 2009 Refurbishment
Since the turn of the year, small and large scale refurbishment projects have been taking place.
Old sets of wooden double doors have been replaced, the Skittle Alley has been repainted and the Hall floor has been revarnished.
From the beginning of April, the whole of the Pool Room has been emptied, to make way for a major refit. The entrance and foyer has had the flooring relayed and new wallpaper, with the same flooring being used for the Conference Room. The Conference Room has had the walls repainted, new lighting and new furniture too.
Also, The Members Lounge has had the walls repainted to coincide with the recently fitted carpet and new ceiling tiles. All the furniture in the Lounge and Pool Room has been replaced with new tables and chairs and also sofas with coffee tables, and barstools.
Both the Lounge and Pool Room will have a new 50" plasma TV, showing channels from Sky Digital.
