Cloakware

  • Cloakware was founded in 1997 by three partners in Ottawa, ON, Canada. At the time, it was called Fallingbrook Technologies. The company would later change its name to Cloakware in 1999. The partners recognized that most security models relied on a "trusted network" with "trusted insiders" and perimeter security to protect applications and data. More importantly, they recognized that this approach was inadequate due to insider threats and a multitude of devices that are deployed in potentially hostile environments. They saw the opportunity to extend security to address attacks against the software and devices themselves.
  • By 2000, Cloakware had filed its first flagship patent and had secured its first-round financing – US$3M.
  • In 2002, Cloakware was awarded for its hard work by receiving a Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Award and continued its global expansion by signing its first EMEA customer.
  • In 2003, TD Ventures, Covington Capital, and Intel had all invested a total of US$4.6M in Cloakware's series A financing. Intel Capital had licensed technology to Cloakware and its first patent was awarded for data flow code transformations. Irdeto, who would later acquire the company, became a customer.
  • In 2004, Cloakware became a Microsoft Security Partner for Windows Media DRM and Cloakware Security Suite (CSS) had its first customer.
  • In 2005, the company reincorporated in Delaware, and raised US$10M in Series B financing from TD Ventures, Globespan Capital, Covington Capital and Intel Capital.
  • Continuing to enlarge its global footprint, Mobile Broadcasting Corporation (MBCo) became Cloakware's first Asia-Pacific customer, and Cloakware Robustness Solutions (now Cloakware DRM Protection Solutions) saw its first of many customers sign on.
  • Cloakware hired its 100th employee in 2006 and started breaking into channel sales in the USA.
  • The year 2007 marked a significant part in Cloakware's history, catapulting it out of the startup company phase. Irdeto, who licensed Cloakware's software protection for IPTV, decided to make the move to acquire Cloakware. Irdeto purchased Cloakware in November 2007.
  • In 2008, Cloakware diversified it's portfolio with two separate product lines.
