Cleveland Yacht Club

The Cleveland Yacht Club was established in 1904, and is situated on picturesque Cleveland Point, 25 kilometres east of Brisbane in South East Queensland, Australia. The C.Y.C. takes pride in being a small, competitive, (but very friendly) family orientated club, whose members welcome visitors at all times. They post regular photos of the weekend racing at this link 1

In an extract from Brian Russell's book AbOUT the 100 year history of the Cleveland Yacht Club, "Sailing In To History" the ethos of the club is best summed up this way -

"It is a club that has always strived to remain easily accessible to all those interested in sailing, regardless of wealth or social standing, thus remaining a true community sporting asset." - Brian Russell. Commodore - 2004

This is backed up by the unwaivering friendliness and family appeal exuded by the club members themselves.

We have a small social program, usually a BBQ on Sunday when racing is held over a weekend, a Christmas party, and our Presentation Dinner at the end of each season.

The Club operates on a voluntary basis with committees - comprising a Management, a Sailing and a Social Committee.

Each member has their turn as officer of the day, or as Assistant.

Working Bees are also a small part of our yearly calendar, each member offering his/her expertise.

A canteen in the Club House is staffed by some of our non-sailors each weekend.

Season Races are held every Sunday, from September to May. The Winter series of racing is conducted fortnightly over the 4 off season months. The Club Championship is run over 10 races and other Series are held throughout the season.

Fun races are included in the Calendar - the Old Salt Race for our Senior Citizens and picnic days for the non-competitive sailors to enjoy time on the water as well.

Our major event-the PEEL ISLAND MARATHON CLASSIC -is held in May, attracts sailors from all over SE Queensland and Northern NSW.

We have many classes of boats participating (MG, Sabre, 125, 420, Contender, Finn, Impulse, 505, Fireball, Mirrors, Lasers, and Catamarans including Windrush, Calypso, Nacra and Hobie), to name a few. The Club also has an ACTIVE Trailer Sailer Group.

Handicapping enables all sailors an opportunity to realise place finishes in all races. Handicaps are based on both class and personal ability with the personal handicap based on the results of the first three races completed, and adjusted according to the competitor's performance there after.

A sailing school is held each Sunday morning, conducted by AYF accredited instructors-and attracts students of all ages.
