Chris Reed (ice hockey)
Christopher Reed (born August 3, 1987) is an American professional ice hockey defenceman who currently plays for the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL. He previously played for The Ohio State Buckeyes Men’s Ice Hockey team of the CCHA.
Personal life
Chris Reed was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents are native Clevelanders and he’s spent the majority of his life growing up in Solon, Ohio with his two sisters. He started playing hockey at the age of six. He graduated from Solon High School in 2005. After two years of playing juniors, Chris would attend The Ohio State University and receive his degree in Accounting.
Playing career
Juniors (2005-07)
Cleveland Jr. Barons (2005-06)
After graduating high school, Chris played for The Cleveland Jr. Barons from 2005-06. In 58 regular-season games, Chris posted 17 points, which included 13 assists. The Barons won the North Division Championship where Chris posted 4 points in 14 playoff games thus sending the team to advance to play in the NAHL’s Robertson Cup Finals.
Ohio Junior Blue Jackets (2006-07)
The Cleveland Jr. Barons team moved down to Columbus, Ohio and became a part of the USHL and continued to play as the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets. While playing for the Jackets in 2006, Chris ranked third on the team with 25 points in 50 regular-season games. Chris had the teams best for assists of 21, which included 10 while on the power play. Chris was an honorable mention for the USHL defenceman of the week five times.
College (2007-11)
Chris started playing hockey for The Ohio State University in the fall of 2007. In his four years playing for Ohio State, Chris Reed played a grand total of 150 games. He scored a total of 4 goals with 34 assists. Overall, Chris’s plus-minus was +16. He played his 100th game December 11, 2009 against Miami University. Chris also received many honors as he played for Ohio State. He received the CCHA Honorable mention All-Rookie team choice, he was a three-time Ohio State Scholar Athlete, two-time Academic Big Ten selection, and he was a finalist for the CCHA’s Scholar-Athlete of the year in 2010 and 2011. His junior-year teammates voted him as the Joseph W. Smith Best Defensive Player.
Professional (2011- Present)
Chris signed with the Cincinnati Cyclones in the summer of 2011. He started off his professional career playing his first game October 22, 2011 against the Reading Royals. He received his first assist against the Trenton Titans on November 12, 2011 and scored his first professional goal against the Greenville Road Warriors on December 3, 2011. However, Chris’s season was cut short due to a concussion at the end of January. He was on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. Chris would sign again with the Cyclones on August 23, 2012. He scored his first goal of his second season on October 26, 2012 against the Elmira Jackals. During his second season, Chris was called up to play his first AHL game with Springfield Falcons on December 16, 2012. On January 12, 2013, Chris was called up again to play with the Houston Aeros.
Injuries
Chris Reed suffered from a concussion in a game in late January. He continued to have symptoms and would end up missing the second half of his first year with the Cincinnati Cyclones on injured reserve.
