Charlie Ocean

Charlie Ocean is the pseudonym of long-time Gulf Coast radio personality Robb Murphy, whose radio career began at WNVY-AM in Pensacola, Florida. During the early 1970s, he worked at a variety of Pensacola radio stations.

Ocean moved to Butte, Montana in 1978 to work at KBOW-AM, but returned to the Gulf Coast in 1979 to become program Director at WNUE-AM in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

He married WBSR news director Joan Keller in 1979. He joined WKRG-FM (now WMXC) "G100" in Mobile, Alabama and worked during drive time in 1981. The couple subsequently divorced in 1983 and Ocean married G100 salesperson Cathy Lee. This union produced two sons, Raymond Robert Murphy III and Sean Ian Murphy.

Ocean joined WIZD-FM (now WYOK) "Wizard 104" in 1985 and stayed there for ten years before leaving to become program director at WGCX-FM (now WZEW) "92 Rock" in Mobile.

Since 1995, Charlie has been employed at WAVH-FM in Mobile, as PM drive and program director. Charlie is currently general manager of WAVH-FM and lives in Mobile with his wife Jennifer and their three children Leah Elizabeth Murphy, Mason Freeman Murphy and John Tyler Murphy.

Since August 2006, WAVH-FM has been known as "The Pirate," with Charlie Ocean at the helm, specializing in breaking down old-school radio IDeaS and formatics. This variation of the "Jack" format proved to be extremely successful, with WAVH-FM showing it's highest ratings in nearly ten years.

Charlie said recently: "If I'd have known The Pirate was going to be this successful, I wouldn't have tried so hard...now we actually have to WORK!"
