He is particularly noted for a pivotal role in the infamous Fifth Down game at Missouri on October 6, 1990 when, during the last play of the game, he ran for the decisive touchdown on fifth down.

At the end of the 1990 season, Colorado played in the Orange Bowl game on January 1, 1991, defeating Notre Dame by a score of 10–9, which propelled Colorado to a controversial share of the mythical national championship of Division I-A college football for 1990. Sixteen years later, after a career in Denver radio and television as well as co-founding a corporate Internet data center, Johnson was appointed in February 2007 as the Assistant Athletic Director at the Boulder campus.
