Capital Tower (Amman, Jordan)

Capital Tower is situated at the Western end of the Al Abdali masterplan, Foster + Partners’ design for the 220m-high Capital Tower creates an anchor for the vibrant new district and responds to the unique topography, climate and culture of Amman.

The tower and two low-rise buildings, all connected at their primary entrance level by an elevated pedestrian plaza which in turn links the project to the Abdali Urban Regeneration Project. The form of the tower is a direct response to the influence of the sun, and the cylindrical design is calculated to maximise views of the dramatic and beautiful surrounding hills of Amman, while supporting a progressive environmental strategy. In plan the tower is divided into segments to give the impression of three more slender towers, each terminating at different heights.

The low rise buildings provide a gentle transition from the streetscape to the landmark tower and protect the landscaped pedestrian plaza from the noise of the surrounding streets. In responding to the challenges of scale - to the individual and to the greater urban context of the city - the plaza provides both civic and more intimate spaces. Rich in culture and commercial growth, it will be a new heart for the City of Amman.
