Camp Peace
Camp Peace is a Sonoma State University based group that staged a three-day camp out on Sonoma State University's campus to promote peace throughout the world and to call for an end to the Iraq War. The group was conceptualized February 8 by Sonoma State University students Jeff Huling, Adam Williams, and Franchesca Schaaf, later gaining momentum with the aid of Camilia Gannon.Students set up 'camp-in' against war
The camp out took place February 12-15th in the Mario Savio Free Speech Area, dedicated to Mario Savio- the leader of the free speech movement in Berkeley during the 1960s. The last day of the protest- February 15- marked the 4th anniversary of the 2003 protests against the Iraq war which occurred in over 600 cities worldwide. Estimates from 8,000,000-30,000,000 people took part in the 2003 protests, making it the largest peace demonstration in history of the world.
At Sonoma State University, a few hundred students and community members came to hear faculty members and Iraq War veterans speak AbOUT the war. Notable speakers included Peter Phillips, director of Project Censored, and Steven F. Freeman, author of “Was the 2004 Election Stolen?” Musician Peter Tracy, a Vietnam Vet and active member of Veterans for Peace performed his anti-war music on the protest’s last day, February 15.
Curiously, on the morning of February 15, the campus was buzzed by low-flying fighter jets, an extraordinary occurrence baffling both students and protesters.
