C-MITES
C-MITES is an acronym for Carnegie Mellon Insitute for Talented Elementary and Secondary Students. The Institute, located on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University offers "Weekend Workshops," which involve hands-on, mentally challenging activities for academically talented students in grades K through 9. In the summer, C-MITES offers one to two-week sessions for grades 3 through 8. Both provide an opportunity for children to meet others of similar ability and interests. Participation is via parent nomination of children who have score at or above the 95th percentile in a nationally normed test or who are currently identified as gifted by their school.
C-MITES performs a talent search via the EXPLORE test which is normed against 8th graders. By administering it as an above-level test for 3rd through 5th grades, a more accurate measure of their degree of giftedness can be obtained.
C-MITES also offers professional development workshops for Act 48 credit on topics such as writing GIEPs, hands-on science and math activities, and differentiation.
