Bummit
BUMMIT (hitchhiking group) is a Sheffield based, student organized Society at the University of Sheffield Students union which raises funds for local charities through hitch-hiking. It is the worlds largest organized student hitchhiking group consisting of approximately 500 people at any time, holding two events per year. The group runs under the umbrella term of a RAG society. As a function, the group organizes international hitchhikes to Eastern Europe with the aim of the participants to travel to the chosen destinations solely relying on the kindness and hospitality of strangers. Established in 2003 by a group of RAG committee members to travel to the seaside destination of Bognor Regis, the event quickly grew based on the success of the hitch and the following destination was set on Budapest. In 2006 the Tallinn hitch raised £64,000 for its nominated charities growing to £87,000 by the 2010 hitch the Budapest and each hitchhike has unfailingly topped the previous fundraising total, both financially and in distance travelled. Bummit is now a brand recognized throughout Europe and an organization fuelled by the elected members of the Bummit Committee. The group presently raises over £100,000 a year, pledging 85 percent of the total to funding charities in the South Yorkshire area.
