Brian F. Martin is an American entrepreneur, founder of the non-profit CDV - Children of Domestic Violence Foundation, and author of Invincible: The 10 Lies You Learn Growing Up With Domestic Violence and the Truths To Set You Free.
Early life & Education
Martin was born in Newark, NJ. His mother worked multiple jobs as a waitress. His father was in jail. Martin grew up in a violent home
. The violence was caused by his mother’s boyfriend. Both Martin’s mother and her boyfriend also came from violent homes but this was something Martin did not know until he was an adult.
He attended Essex County College in Newark, NJ where he graduated with a bachelor's degree and an MBA from Rutgers University.
Career
Martin got a job as an assistant brand manager or marketing manager of a large consumer packaged goods company.
In 1999 he started a part time business which became Brand Connections, The company distributed free product samples to people while they were traveling if they forgot something they needed, distributing more than 150 million samples each year in the US and Europe. Martin sold the company to a private equity firm in 2008 for $150 Million. He is also the co-founder of several other media companies including Brandshare, Social Media Link and Brandshop.
In 2007 Martin founded Makers of Memories, which was to become CDV - Children of Domestic Violence. He sponsored the first congressional briefing on Capitol Hill to educate policy makers, leaders and the public about the children affected by domestic violence. In 2012 Martin & his documentary The Children Next Door were featured in an episode of Dr. Phil. The award winning documentary was invited to screen in more than 25 film festivals.
In 2013 Martin worked with Nickelodeon on the Emmy nominated children’s program Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special Family Secrets: When Violence Hits Home.
In 2014 Martin released his first book, Invincible: The 10 Lies You Learn Growing Up with Domestic Violence, and the Truths to Set You Free published by Penguin Random House in October 2014, The book reached the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and Publishers Weekly best seller list.
Martin was cited extensively throughout the NFL Domestic Violence debates in September 2014, citing that the NFL needs to focus on understanding how many of their players grew up living with domestic violence.
Personal
Martin was divorced in 2010 and lives in NJ with his two children. Prior to his divorce he was building a home that he then decided to sell for $16.5 million.
