Biopôle

The first of its kind in French-speaking part of Switzerland, Lausanne's Biopôle Park is a science park of 80,000 square metres destined to host companies whose main activity is in the life sciences field. Biopôle offers space for industrial, R&D or administrative use. All the structures within the park respect the strictest environmental standards. Fully integrated in one of the densest life sciences networks in the world, this park provides its tenants with a strategic location for the development of their activities. Directly linked to the principal centres of excellence in the region, the Biopôle site is located at the intersection of the large Lausanne campus, complementing the CHUV (University Hospital of Vaud), the EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), the UNIL (University of Lausanne) and the major industrial concerns.

Origin

In the context of its policy on poles of development, promoting in particular high quality economic growth in line with the notion of sustainable development, the Canton of Vaud decided to create suitable conditions for the initiation of new activities that generate jobs. It was to this end that in 2004 the authorities founded the non profit privately-run company Biopôle SA. In November 2005, the company presented its shareholders with the development plan of the site, together with its business plan. The declared aims of the company are to develop by the year 2015 more than 60,000 square metres of rental space which would allow over 2000 people to come and work on the site. In autumn 2007 work began on the first Biopôle building, and at the end of 2008 the first tenants moved in.
