Bethane Middleton-Brown
Bethane Lorelle Middleton-Brown, (April 15, 1970 - March 18, 2021), was a therapist and racial justice advocate who lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is Reverend DePayne Middleton's sister, who was one of the nine people who were killed at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17, 2015. This church is one of the oldest black churches in the United States, and it has long been a center for organizing events that are related to civil rights.
Background and personal life
Middleton-Brown was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and was the youngest of three daughters born to Leroy and Frances Middleton. Her father was an African Methodist Episcopal minister. Middleton-Brown was described to have an inseparable relationship with her sister and was part of a close-knit family.
The shooters bond hearing
During <nowiki/>s bond hearing, Middleton-Brown, alongside several other family members of the victims, addressed him at the Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston, South Carolina. Middleton-Brown said, "That was my sister, and I'd like to thank you on behalf of my family for not allowing hate to win. For me, I'm a work in progress. And I acknowledge that I am very angry. But one thing that DePayne always enjoined in our family … is she taught me that we are the family that love built. We have no room for hating, so we have to forgive. I pray God on your soul."
Middleton-Brown was an honoree Woman of the Year at 2015 Glamour Women Of The Year Awards at Carnegie Hall on November 9, 2015 in New York City. She received this honor alongside Nadine Collier, Alana Simmons, Felicia Sanders and Polly Sheppard.
On March 18, 2021, at the age of 50, Bethane Middleton-Brown died in a hospital in Charlotte after having a seizure.
