Beadle and tatum

George Wells Beadle and Edward Lawrie Tatum are known for their work which helped pave the way to modern gene theory. Their experiments involved Neurospora crassa, a red bread mold fungus.

Their one gene-one enzyme hypothesis eventually lead the way to the modern view of genes encoding for one or more polypeptide chains.
