Bawan Daath Canal
Bawan Daath Canal is a historic canal located in the Fatehpur area of Haldwani, Uttarakhand. It was constructed in 1882 during the British era and is approximately 40 feet in length and 1 kilometer long, with 52 stone pillars. The name originated from these pillars. The canal flows from Fatehpur to Lamachaur along the road connecting to Bel-Basani.
History
The canal was built by the British authorities as part of an irrigation infrastructure project. Construction began in 1882 and was completed by 1904. It was designed to channel water from the Bhakra River to agricultural lands in several villages. The canal was used until around 1905, after which its usage declined due to a lack of maintenance. Restoration work has started, led by the Nainital District Magistrate. A budget of ₹78 lakh was allocated for the project, with an initial installment of ₹39 lakh transferred to Kumaon Nirman Vikas Nigam, the agency responsible. Currently, work is ongoing to restore the canal and its use for irrigation.
