Bartolomé Mujica
Bartolomé Mujica Espinosa (1788–1839) was a Chilean government official who served as senior officer of the Department of War and exercised temporary responsibility for military administration during the early republican period.
He served as acting Secretary of War in 1831, when the administration of military and naval affairs was temporarily divided between separate departmental officials.
Early life
Mujica was born in Santiago and baptized on 24 August 1788. According to genealogical records, he was the son of a family established in the Ñuñoa area of Santiago. He married Carmen Mujica Cervantes in 1829.
He was described as a Latin scholar and teacher at the Instituto Nacional, in addition to his later administrative career.
Political career
Mujica held administrative positions within Chile's Ministry of War and Navy during the early republican period. Historical ministerial records identify him among officials entrusted with the administration of the War Department during temporary absences or changes of ministers.
In January 1823, Mujica performed acting duties in the Department of War during the final weeks of the government of Supreme Director Bernardo O'Higgins. He continued to perform temporary ministerial functions during the provisional government established following O'Higgins's resignation. During the 1820s, he remained associated with the War Department and signed official communications when authorized to do so.
On 1 February 1830, a historical ministerial register recorded Mujica as undersecretary of the Department of War, signing documents alongside Juan Francisco Meneses, a member of the governing junta.
On 10 April 1830, the government of José Tomás Ovalle approved a reorganization of the Ministry of War and Navy. The decree expressly confirmed Mujica as senior officer of the War Department, while José Manuel Calderón continued as senior officer of the Navy Department. The annual salary attached to each senior officer position was 1,500 pesos.
On 31 August 1831, Mujica was recorded as responsible for the Department of War, while José Manuel Calderón was responsible for the Department of the Navy. This arrangement followed a period during which Diego Portales had exercised authority over both portfolios.
Mujica's acting responsibility ended on 19 September 1831, when Portales resumed the combined War and Navy portfolio under President José Joaquín Prieto.
Mujica died around April 1839. He had executed a will in Santiago on 8 April of that year.
