History

The farmhouse, probably between 1910 and 1930 The surviving 17th-century Dovecote The earliest record of Barnhurst Farm was in 1521, when Joan Milton sold the moated farmhouse to James Leveson, who was living in Wolverhampton at the time; the holdings of the estate had doubled by 1547. It was eventually sold to the Cresswell family, who constructed the gatehouse in 1602 and the dovecote during the 17th century, before being purchased by Samuel Hellier, who expanded the building during the 1720s.

Wolverhampton Corporation purchased Barnhurst Farm in 1867, developing part of the area as a sewerage farm by 1870. In 1928, the system of pumping onto farmland was abandoned, and biological filters were used and pumped into Pendeford Brook.

The gatehouse was demolished in 1961, and the manor house was demolished in 1963. The Dovecotes housing estate was built next to the dovecote during the 1970s, and the dovecote was saved after plans to demolish it in 2003 and 2004 failed.
