Autumn red
Autumn red (also spelled as autumnred) are an English band formed in 2003, hailing from Brighton, East Sussex. Stemming from a grunge, post rock sound, their music has evolved into a genre combining elements of folk, country/bluegrass, post rock, old-time music and blues. Their early music drew “influence from early innovators including Pink Floyd and the Velvet Underground, and crosses over between that golden-era to the later driven guitar sound of the Smashing Pumpkins and U2. 1 Allmusic described the band as “moody rockers…comparable with the likes of muse and the Smashing Pumpkins”. 2

== History == The band began in 2003, shortly after Williams had finished his solo album Luna, released and distributed by Internet Arcetecs (I.A. New Media). Dedicated to creating a new heavier sound, he sought local musicians to join his band. A successful search brought James Drohan (of Windmill & the Blue Skies) and Tom Swann on bass (of The Crave) to Autumnred. With the added dynamics of the new members, it propelled the group into a much edgier, grittier sound than Williams’ established acoustic intonation. Due to conflicting schedules, Swann was replaced with long standing bass player Mikey Foulerton.
Once the band created a solid line-up, they spent the first initial year exploring different sounds, collaboratively writing and performing at intimate venues in Brighton (such as the Freebutt, The Prince Albert & Lift) often to small crowds. By the time the band were ready to take their wares to the masses in 2004, indie music was the emerging popular music of the year. The scene was saturated with indie bands, such as the likes of The Kooks, a Brighton band who also shared a stage with Autumn red. Constant gig playing won them a large following in the south. Quickly becoming known for their intense live shows and unpredictable stage manner, the bands popularity spread quickly through the tight knit Brighton scene, eventually headlining sold out shows in Brightons most popular venues. The bands quick rise to success saw them land regular sold out headlining gigs at the infamous Dublin Castle in Camden, a popular live music haunt known for introducing the best up and coming bands. Along the bands travels they supported and shared stages with accomplished artists such as Martin Grech, The Noisettes and Sarah Jay of Massive Attack.
Among their years saw different musicians join the band, such as Jim Briffett (of Clearlake) that inevitably influenced their sound and revered tracks such as Take My Soul and Narcissist were written. In 2007 the band recorded their Take My Soul EP 3 with Mark Flanery, renowned producer who notably worked with U2, Sonic Youth, Def Leppard and Depeche Mode. However in 2008, the band were forced to take some time out and dismembered for a year due to illness. Once reformed, they began recordings at the Metway and Church Road Studio in 2009. Influenced by Williams solo works, their old style and songs were dropped. A darker folk sound was adopted heavily influenced by John Martyn and Nick Drake using new instrumentation such as the banjo and violin.
The band have recently made a statement on their mySpace page on the 17th November 2009 that both Autumn reds EP together with Williams’ solo album (also under the Autumn red name) will be released in early march 2010.
