Asma bint Utarid

Asma bint Utarid ibn Hajib ibn Zurarah al-Darimiyya al-Tamimiyya (Arabic: أسماء بنت عطارد بن حاجب) was a woman of the Banu Darim branch of the Banu Tamim tribe. She was the daughter of Utarid ibn Hajib, a prominent chief of Banu Tamim, and the wife of Ubayd Allah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab, a son of the second Rashidun caliph, Umar ibn al-Khattab.

Early life

Asma belonged to the distinguished Banu Darim clan of Banu Tamim. Her father, Utarid ibn Hajib, was a prominent Tamimi chief, orator and poet. He had been among the leaders of Banu Tamim who interacted with the Sasanian court before Islam and later became a prominent figure among the Tamimis during the lifetime of Muhammad.

Utarid was also associated with the delegation of Banu Tamim that visited Muhammad in Medina in 8 AH. He served as the delegation's principal orator and was subsequently appointed by Muhammad to administer the alms of Banu Darim.
