Ashiq Hussain

Ashiq Hussain Ph.D. is a Pakistani Neuroscientist, essayist and public speaker on science. Dr. Hussain is best known for his research on the olfactory system.

Personal life

Hussain was Born in Rajanpur district of Pakistan. He is member of influential business and academic royal Ghilzai family of Jampur. According to Elphinstone, Ghilzai descended from the Khalaj or Khilji Turks who entered Afghanistan in the 10th century and established Khilji dynasty. Ghilzai later moved to current Pakistan".

His father is businessman while his mother is homemaker. Hussain's cousin Dr. Shoukat Parvez is chairman of Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR). Hussain fluently speaks American English, Urdu, Hindi, Saraiki, Punjabi, German and knows enough Arabic to get by, at least in Arabic countries.

Education and research

Hussain received his M.Phil in Molecular Biology in 2006 from the prestigious Center for Applied and Molecular Biology, with highest distinction of summa cum laude and a Gold Medal. He did his Ph.D. research in Neuroscience at University of Cologne and Harvard University and was awarded Ph.D. from University of Cologne in 2010 with highest distinction of summa cum laude . He persuaded his post-doctoral research at Yale University. Hussain is currently working at Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology Germany.
