Ars Cantus

The ensemble Ars Cantus was established in the year 2000 as a vocal group associated with the Wroclaw Chamber Choir (Wroclawscy Kameralisci), under the artistic direction of Tomasz Dobrzanski. Ars Cantus performs the music of bygone epochs, from the Middle Ages (songs from the medieval Carmina Burana manuscript) to the early Baroque (e.g. Salomone Rossi - Court and Synagogue Music). An essential part of the repertoire of Ars Cantus is the MusicAL heritage of Lower Silesia, which reaches back to the 14th century and which, in many cases, is now being made available to listeners for the first time in centuries (Banquet at City Hall - works from Wroclaw and Silesia musical prints of the 16th and 17th centuries - and Serena mente jubilo - works from 14th and 15th century manuscripts from Wroclaw, Zagan and Zielona Gora). The group Ars Cantus performed at Flanders Festiwal in Alden Biesen in Belgium, International Summer Academy of Early Music in Wilanow, at the Festival „Song of our roots” in Jaroslaw, Festivals of the Polish Society of Early Music in Royal Castle in Warsaw, Festival „Musica Memorabilis” in Poznan, International Early Music Festivals „Wratislavia Cantans” „ May with Early Music” and „Forum Musicum” in Wroclaw, at the Festival delle Nazioni in Italy, Festival of Court Dances in Cracow. Ars Cantus gave also many concerts in Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria. In december 2004 the concert of Ars Cantus was broadcasted from the Warsaw Studio S1 to the countries of the European Broadcasting Union.

In 2001, Ars Cantus was awarded the Zofia Rayzacherowa Prize for the "greatest artistic distinctiveness in the field of early music" at the 11th Festival of Early Music at the Royal Castle in Warsaw for its performance of medieval songs from the Carmina Burana collection. The compact disc "Musica Rediviva, from Wroclaw music prints of the 16th and 17th centuries ", recorded by Ars Cantus, received the Wroclaw Music Award for 2003 and was nominated for the “Fryderyk ‘03” award. In 2004 Ars Cantus recorded the CD “Musica Figurata in Silesia and Wroclaw during the 14th and 15th centuries”. This CD was nominated for “Fryderyk ‘04” as well.
