Arid (video game)
Arid is a free-to-play open-world survival game developed by Sad Viscacha Studio and published by Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) in the Netherlands. Set in a fictionalized version of the Atacama Desert in South America during the 1930s, the game tasks the player with surviving extreme heat, dehydration, and sandstorms following a cargo plane crash. Released on Steam in 2021 as an academic graduation showcase, the game gained traction for its harsh environmental mechanics and won the Best Student Game award at the 2021 Dutch Game Awards.
Gameplay
Played from a first-person perspective, Arid focuses heavily on environmental survival rather than combat against monsters or zombies. The player controls a downed pilot who must navigate the scorching desert to reach a rescue zone. The core gameplay loop revolves around managing a series of vital meters: health, hunger, thirst, and fatigue.
Unlike many survival games, The Primary antagonist in Arid is the sun. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight rapidly raises the player's body temperature and causes sunburns, forcing the player to travel primarily at night, seek shade beneath rock formations, or apply mud and aloe vera to their skin. Players scavenge abandoned nitrate mining camps and claustrophobic caves to find tools, beds, and clean water. A basic crafting system allows players to disassemble ramshackle furniture, craft torches for exploring pitch-black tunnels, and build animal traps to catch small game.
Development and release
Arid was developed over a 24-week period by Sad Viscacha Studio, a collective of 21 students enrolled in the Creative Media and Game Technologies program at Breda University of Applied Sciences. Because the title was developed under an academic framework as a portfolio piece and graduation showcase, BUas published the game completely free of charge with no microtransactions.
The game debuted as a demo during the Steam Next Fest in early 2021 before entering Early Access on May 26, 2021. Following several major patches that added difficulty sliders, saving mechanics, and bug fixes based on community feedback, the game reached its 1.0 full release state on June 29, 2021. After the final localized update in late 2021, ACTIVE development ceased as the student team graduated and dispersed into the commercial video game industry.
Reception
Despite being a student project, Arid received significant attention from mainstream gaming media and independent content creators. According to database trackers, the game accumulated over 100,000 downloads and currently holds a "Very Positive" aggregate score based on thousands of player reviews.
Writing for PC Gamer, Senior Editor Christopher Livingston praised the game's atmosphere and heat mechanics, noting that "the desert environments are fantastically done" and "Arid feels [...] hot." He also highlighted the game's nerve-wracking cave exploration and recommended it to fans of the hardcore survival genre.
The game experienced a surge in visibility on YouTube during its launch window. Prominent indie and survival game curators, including Splattercatgaming and GameEdged, published dedicated let's-play reviews that individually garnered tens of thousands of views, driving significant traffic to the game's Steam page.
Awards and nominations
In October 2021, Arid won the award for Best Student Game at the Dutch Game Awards, held in conjunction with the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision.
Additionally, the project was recognized internationally as a finalist for Hobby Game of the Year at the 2021 Game Development World Championship (GDWC), and was selected as a finalist in the Game of the Year category at The Rookies, an international awards platform for digital artists and student creators.
