Are Anime Titties Aerodynamic

"Analysis and Qualitative Effects of Large Breasts on Aerodynamic Performance and Wake of a "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid" Character" is a parody scientific paper written by N. Rabino and self-published on the academic networking site ResearchGate on 17 January 2018. Written in the format of a genuine engineering study, the fourteen-page paper applies computational fluid dynamics to Quetzalcoatl ("Lucoa"), a character from the anime series Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, and became an example of viral joke scholarship shared widely online.

Content

The paper compares two three-dimensional human models: a reference model based on the character's buxom design and a modified version with a greatly reduced bust, tested at simulated airflow speeds of 1 to 30 metres per second using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations with the SST k–ω turbulence model in ANSYS Fluent, examining drag, lift, skin friction, and turbulence kinetic energy. Framed as a test of the anime fandom catchphrase "flat is justice", the paper concludes that the larger-busted model exhibited more favourable aerodynamic behaviour, including lower drag and a more organized wake, than the modified flat-chested model.

The paper imitates the conventions of academic publishing, including an abstract, literature review citing genuine research on human aerodynamics, AMS subject classifications, and a keyword list that mixes technical terms with internet slang.

Reception

The author announced the paper in a post on the Reddit community r/anime on 18 January 2018, where it received more than 1,300 upvotes within a day and became one of the community's most popular posts. The paper was reported on by the Japanese technology news site Gigazine and by Livedoor News, which noted that it had been read more than 240,000 times within roughly a week of publication. It has since been preserved on the Internet Archive and documented by Know Your Meme as part of both the "flat is justice" meme and the meme culture surrounding Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid.
