Anthony Fernandez

Anthony Fernandez (born in Tarzana, Los Angeles, California, 1982) is a professional basketball player in the LNPB for the Campeche Bucaneros. Fernandez, although born in California, moved to Detroit, Michigan when he was two years old. Starting in the year 2006 Anthony has been playing professionally. The Bucaneros signed him in the summer of 2006 to a two-year deal. Anthony is a 6'7" small forward. During his first year he averaged 9.6 points, 4.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. His next year he added on to all his stats by averaging 11.9 points, 4.4 assists, 8.4 rebounds, 2.0 blocks. Anthony is said to have the wing span of a seven-foot-tall man.

Early life

Anthony moved to Detroit' Michigan when he was the age of two. Growing up in Detroit Anthony learned how to be tough and aggressive from an early age. Anthony attended the elementary school of Holy Redememer and played on the eighth Grade team when he was only in sixth grade. He was the tallest kid on the team at 5 foot 11. It was said that Anthony could dunk by the age of 13 when he was in the eighth grade and this is where he received the nickname "Big Time" by a local parent. Being able to stay out of trouble from an early age was critical for Anthony considering all of the bad influences around him.

High School years

Anthony attended Holy Redemer High School in Detroit. Anthony coming into the team that came in fourth in the state as a freshman starting on varsity was a large leap for him. Anthony prevailed though and averaged a decent 10.5 points 3.1 assists 0.6 blocks. 8.1 rebounds. His sophomore year he became the team captain and exploded on the scoring end with 20.7 points 5.7 assists, 1.2 blocks, 10.0 rebounds. By his junior year he was avergeing 35.7 points 8.3 assists, 3.0 blocks. 10.9 rebounds. Looking for a brilliant future.

College Years

Anthony finally found a college . Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Only playing his first two years which he averaged 15.6 points 6.6 assists, 10.9 rebounds, 2.0 blocks. He decided to sit out his Junior and Senior year. Tony Determined never to give up on his dream wouldn't let any of these bad coaches get in his way. During his time at AQ, he also earned the nickname "Freak." The Reasoning behind this nickname is unknown, but it seems to fit him well.

Track And field career

In high school Fernandez participated in the high jump and long jump for track and field. He was all-state for both. His longest long jump was 21 feet 3 inches. Due to lack of the school's ability to provide a steady practice environment, Anthony did not pursue this athletic ability in college.

Coaching career

While working on getting his weight up, anthony coached an 8th grade basketball team at Sacred Heart Elementary in Dearborn Michigan; he helped lead the team to a 10-0 season making it to the sweet sixteen in the playoffs. He also coached some of those players in AYBT for a team called the OAC Falcons Anthony also coached in the MBA basketball camp witch stand for the Metro Basketball Association and is the main league in the Metro Detroit Area for basketball

Out of college life

Anthony struggling to achieve his dream of playing in the NBA one day were slowly sliping away from him but continued to never give up. He got a job working at the Dearborn, Michigan Rec Center which allowed him to work out whenever along with getting a lot of gym time. Tony's amazing skills at dunking always gave him some attention, so he decided one day to try out for the And 1 open run when it came to Detroit. As it turns out he made the team and played in the game scoring 10 points with 5 minutes of playing time. He also came in second in the AND 1 dunk contest at half time. Finally gaining some of the confidence he had back in high school his dream began to take flight and begaing training a brudal schedule getting up his total weight from 180 pounds to 210 pounds. He began looking for an agent but sending emails to 15 agents none wanted to work with him, sad but not down tony persevered. Little did he know when he attended a Gus Macker in Phoenix Arizona he was found by a scout from the Campeche Bucaneros. Immeditally he signed and was on a flight down to Campeche and his journey began.

The Bucaneros

Anthony has been playing with the Bucaneros for the past two seasons under contract. He has been a key player in their recent success, finishing off this season with the record of 22-20. Anthony has been mostly a sixth man on the Bucanero rotation, with the exception for a few games he has started. The Bucs improved tremendosuly from last year's record and look to improve on this record next season. His stats are above.

Other Work

-Anthony has also worked at Ceaser Chavaz, a local high school in Detroit. He helped kids who had learning disabilities get thrugh there day at school.

Personal life

In Anthonys two years in Mexico Tony met a girl named Ana Gabriela, they were married this past summer and have a baby on the way. Tony spends his off-season time back where his career began in Detroit playing with friends. For relaxation Anthony likes playing video games such as HaLo 3. His Xbox Live gamertag is "Toneman21". Anthony often can be seen working out at the Dearborn Rec Center everyday during his off season. He enjoys eating at Buffalo Wild Wings often. Anthony likes to take protein shakes, he believed they helped him gain weight along with strength. Anthony has one brother along with one sister.
