Anshuman Ajai Singh

Anshuman Ajai Singh is an Indian film actor, singer and musician. He recently debuted as the character Jimmy, in the 2012 production of Agent Vinod.

Early life

Anshuman is the middle of three sons and was born in Mulund, a suburb of Mumbai. His mother, Dr. Shakuntala Singh, is a native of Karwar, a town on the border of Goa and Karnataka and is the current principal of Joshi Bedekar College of Arts and Commerce, Thane. His father, Dr. Ajai R. Singh, Psychiatrist and Editor, Mens Sana Monographs, was born in Mumbai, to a Rajput family originally from Jaisalmer. Anshuman’s grandfather had moved his family to Mumbai in pursuit of the Bollywood dream but did not find success as an actor. Anshuman’s parents met after his mother moved to Mumbai to further her career as a lecturer and while his father was still doing internship in a medical college. Anshuman was born in 1983, 2 years after his elder brother Anupam, and 5 years before his younger brother, Anugraha. Growing up in Mulund, Anshuman attended St. Pius X High School and was an accomplished student across the board. He began to play badminton at the age of 6 and later played at the professional competitive under 10, under 12 and under 15 levels. He went on to win various open state tournaments and competed in many prestigious national level open tournaments. In addition to sports, Anshuman was enrolled in classical Hindustani vocal lessons where he began to cultivate strong and versatile vocals along with a knack for playing various instruments. He later attended V.G. Vaze College, Mulund before moving to St.Petersbourg, Russia in 2002 to attend medical college. He graduated with an MBBS degree and moved back to Mumbai in December 2008. Over those 6 grueling years studying medicine, Anshuman continued to harbor his dream to become an actor.

Career

Interestingly, Anshuman first began his modelling and performing career while studying medicine in St. Petersbourg. He was selected as a model for local Russian brands and would also perform with his band at many annual Indian functions. To the delight of the Russian audiences, Anshuman and his band would perform hit sufi, ghazals and rock songs from Kailash Kher, Jal, and Jagjit Singh to the classics of Metallica and Guns'n'Roses. Upon his return to Mumbai in December 2008, Anshuman enrolled in a 5 month acting course at one of the city’s prominent acting schools. While focusing on making the right career moves and waiting for a substantial role in a Hindi film, Anshuman modelled in South Africa, Dubai and Mumbai for international and Indian clothing brands. In 2010 Anshuman received his first major break with Illuminati Films, in Sriram Raghavan’s 2012 release of Agent Vinod, starring real-life couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Anshuman plays the mysterious rogue agent, Jimmy, who has been entrusted with the daunting task of transporting a bomb of mass destruction from Latvia, through Somalia, over the Indian border and finally planting it in the middle of an urban hub of New Delhi. His character spoke little but commanded a striking presence on screen. Anshuman’s performance in the film was duly noted.
