Early Life
Anil kumar was born in Pilikkode village of Kasargod district, Kerala. He did B.A and M.A in History from the University of Calicut. He was active in left wing student movement, The Student Federation of India (SFI) during his college days and was the General Secretary of the college union.

Career
He joined Deshabhimani, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of India in 1988 as sub-editor currently working as its Assistant Editor. He has written extensively on farmer suicides, media ethics, man Gods, Gujarat carnage and more. He is the author of 50 books and more than 1000 articles in various Malayalam dailies. He was greatly influenced by the famous writer M. N. Vijayan.

His first book was an intellectual biography of E. M. S. Namboodiripad, the well-known Indian communist leader. The book titled Charithrathinoppam Nadanna Oral (The man who walked along with History) got critical acclaim and won the prestigious Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 1997, the book also received Abudabi Sakthi Award conferred by the overseas Indians in Middle East. He won the best journalist award of Tulunadu Magazine.
He regularly conducts workshops and training programs for budding journalists in Kerala and speaks at seminars. He visited Sri Lanka soon after the assassination of V. Prabhakaran and wrote a book titled Lankan Sights in the year 2011. He participated in the Sharjah international book fair 2012, 2013, 2014 and wrote a travelogue An Escape to life. He represented India and led the four member Indian team of senior journalists in the South East Asia media Program held at Jakarta about regional conflicts. He wrote a travelogue Indonesian Diary after the visit.
