Anhalt EBM
Anhalt EBM or new oldchool EBM is a form of electronic body music reinvented in the Saxony-Anhalt state, part of East Germany. The Electric Tremor community in Dessau was very important for the beginning of this whole new music movement and possibly they were the first organization to impulsionate this new kind of EBM.
Anhalt EBM sounds a little bit different from the original EBM. It's more like a D.I.Y. electro punk style, mixed with oldschool industrial music. The original sound was darker, experimental and sometimes dancefloor oriented. The modern bands are mainly focused in specific EBM oldschool bands like Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft (D.A.F.), Nitzer Ebb, Die Krupps (in the electronic phase) or Pouppée Fabrikk. The music structure has got almost no guitars, hard bass melodies, analog synthesizers and a lot of digital and acoustic percussions. The voices can be very strong, sometimes with a military attitude or with a simple, clean punk rock vibe. Normally there are no effects or distortion in the vocals, just a little reverb or echo effect. That gives Anhalt EBM a more simple, direct and minimal sound but a very hard punk feeling.
Fashion
With a new music genre comes a new music culture and with it a new identity. The haircuts and the clothing style adopted a very peculiar form, which can cause doubts about the relation with politics or with the oldschool forms of EBM and can be easily mistaken with the skinhead movement. It's not unusual to see Anhalt EBM fans using short, rockabilly and ramp style haircuts, braces or suspenders, turnup jeans, military boots and military camouflage clothing. This only connects anhalt style to some kind of socialist, anarchist, punk and working class spirit, but has got nothing directly to do with the skinhead scene.
