Andrea Kirsch

Andrea Kirsch (born 1954) is an American filmmaker and Director based in New York City, known for her work in documentary and experimental cinema. She is the founder of Jump Room Films and has directed films that have screened at international festivals, museums, and on television worldwide. Her work spans experimental short films, documentary features, and narrative drama.

Education

Kirsch began her education in experimental filmmaking at Bard College, studying under Adolphus Mekas and Ernie Gehr, and continued at New York University Film School under the direction of Haig Manoogian.

Career

Kirsch works across documentary, experimental, and narrative formats. She is the founder and director of Jump Room Films, an independent production company based in New York City.

Her best-known documentary, William Christie et Les Arts Florissants, ou La passion du baroque (1994), is an intimate portrait of the American-French conductor William Christie and his acclaimed early music ensemble Les Arts Florissants. The film was shot over a period of three years, following Christie and his musicians to Aix-en-Provence, New York, Boston, Caen, Paris, and London, and includes excerpts from productions of works by Lully, Rameau, Monteverdi, Marin MARAIS, Purcell. The documentary was produced with support from French cultural institutions, including ARTE, the CNC, and the French Ministry of Culture.

Her experimental short films range from personal and political essay films to works engaging with art, music, and American culture. Films include Fair Doctrine (1982–1986), An American Poem (1987–1988), [...] Deferment — When You Meet the Buddha on the Road Kill Him, Her, It (1989), Dreaming in Yellow While Searching for Carpaccio's Gold (1990), and Goude Revolution (1997).

Her most recent directorial work is Death Comes to Pushkin, a dramatic film produced by Jump Room Films that examines the life of Alexander Pushkin.
