In August 2024, he was involved in resolving a public transport impasse in Etwatwa following negotiations between the City of Ekurhuleni and local taxi associations, which led to the restoration of transport services in the area.

Mngwevu has also spoken publicly about challenges affecting the city’s transport infrastructure, including vandalism of traffic lights, road flooding, and the impact of infrastructure damage on commuter safety and municipal costs.

Community initiatives

Prior to and alongside his municipal leadership role, Mngwevu has been involved in community development initiatives in the Ekurhuleni area. He organised annual "Back to School" campaigns in KwaThema, during which school uniforms and educational supplies were distributed to underprivileged learners, often coinciding with his birthday celebrations.

2026 Mozambique flooding incident

In mid-January 2026, Mngwevu was reported missing after the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in the Chokwé region of southern Mozambique during severe flooding.

The City of Ekurhuleni confirmed the incident in an official statement, indicating that Mngwevu was part of an official delegation at the time of the accident.

Search and rescue operations involving Mozambican authorities, South African emergency services, and the South African National Defence Force were launched. Media reports indicated that contact was established with at least one other individual from the vehicle, while efforts to locate Mngwevu continued.
