The hairstyle in Thailand has changed many times. There are many reasons that there are different hairstyles and haircuts in Thailand. Some hairstyles look good during the ancient times but nowadays it might not look very appealing to the modern world. If we do not have the ancient hairstyle, we will not have new hairstyles that came from the inspiration of the ancient hairstyles.
Song Co Dong
The hairstyle starts in the SukhoThai period. Both of male and female hairstyles are nearly similar. This hairstyle is so popular in the SukhoThai period because in that period, it does not have any wars, the country is peaceful.
Ma Had Thai
This hairstyle starts in the Ayutthaya period. In that period, it often has a war many times. So, it is the reason that the hairstyles in Ayutthaya period has changed from the Sukhothai period. Both of male and female have to have these hairstyles. For male, this hairstyle is so convenient for war because it is short and they did not have time for dressed up or concern AbOUT the hairstyle. For female, they have to have this hairstyle because this hairstyle is short and it looks like a man. So, it can be easily for escape or survive when the war was happened. But not every female has a short hair. Some female has the long hair because she loves and she wants to have the long hair.
Dok Kra Tum
This hairstyle is very popular in the period of King Rama V. This hairstyle must not have the flower because in that period, they think that who have the flower on the hair, it looks impolite.
Mud Chook (Top Knot), Ga, Go (Pony Tail), Phom Pia (Pig Tail)
These four hairstyles are for the children in the ancient period. The reason that they have to have these hairstyles because the Thailand weather is hot. The children are inconvenient for having the long hair because they do not know yet how to take care their hairs of themselves. And another reason that they have to have these hairstyles is because the tradition and belief. The Thai people belief that these hairstyles can protect their children from the bad spirits and ghost.
