AlphaEase FC
AlphaEase FC is an image analysis software developed by Alpha Innotech Corporation, initially released in 1999. It was designed for life science applications, particularly gel and blot image analysis, providing digital alternatives to traditional film methods in fluorescence and chemiluminescence detection.
History and development
AlphaEase FC originated as part of Alpha Innotech’s FluorChem imaging systems in the late 1990s. Early versions were compatible with CCD-based imagers, replacing traditional film-based methods. Over time, the software evolved to include support for scanners, CCD cameras, and laser-based imaging systems.
In 2009, Alpha Innotech was acquired by Cell Biosciences, which integrated AlphaEase FC into its protein analysis offerings. After subsequent mergers, AlphaEase FC became part of ProteinSimple and, in 2014, Bio-Techne. Bio-Techne transitioned to newer software, AlphaView, effectively phasing out AlphaEase FC for new installations, although legacy usage persisted.
Features and capabilities
AlphaEase FC offered comprehensive 2D gel image analysis features, including image capture, enhancement, annotation, and quantitative analysis. Image optimization included contrast adjustments, digital filtering, and false-color imaging.

In industry, AlphaEase FC supported biotechnology and pharmaceutical applications, notably drug discovery assays and quality control. Its integration with imaging hardware contributed significantly to the digital transition from film-based to digital imaging in laboratories globally.
Versions and distribution
AlphaEase FC was proprietary commercial software bundled with Alpha Innotech imaging systems, with stand-alone licenses available. Major releases included versions 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0, with regular updates enhancing compatibility and user experience.
Post-acquisition, Genetic Technologies Inc. provided ongoing distribution and support, ensuring software availability for legacy users.
Current status and legacy
AlphaEase FC was largely replaced by AlphaView software under ProteinSimple/Bio-Techne. Despite no longer being actively marketed, it remains in use in legacy systems valued for its analytical workflow.
AlphaEase FC significantly influenced the digital transition in molecular imaging, setting standards for subsequent gel documentation software.
