His successes in the health care industry likewise include training and managing a volunteer staff for the Hospice of Southeastern Michigan where he increased hospice volunteers by 300 percent within one year.

Martin has a strong track record as a community activist. He has been a candidate for the Detroit City Council and counts as his greatest achievement the mentoring of 13 Detroit area youth, five of whom are college graduates. In addition, he has coordinated and successfully passed smoke-free environmental legislation in Detroit and Wayne County. Martin authored "The Martin Rule", the State of Michigan’s model for its comprehensive seatbelt law, "Click-it or Ticket".
