Alex Goryachev

Alex Goryachev is an American technology executive, innovation strategist, and keynote speaker who works in the fields of innovation management, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital transformation. He has held leadership roles at Cisco Systems, where he directed global innovation programs, and is the author of Fearless Innovation: A No-Nonsense Guide (2020), a book that appeared on the Wall Street Journal bestseller list.

Early life and education

Goryachev immigrated to the United States from the Soviet Union in the 1990s. He began working in the technology sector without completing a college degree. He has held an academic affiliation as Innovator-in-Residence at Tulane University.

Career

From 1998 to 2000, Goryachev worked at Liquid Audio on digital music distribution technologies. He later joined Napster as Senior Manager of Operations during the company’s legal restructuring, focusing on digital rights management. He also held roles at IBM Global Services and Pfizer, where he worked on enterprise technology and digital transformation projects.

Goryachev joined Cisco Systems in 2004 and later became Managing Director of the company’s Global Innovation Centers. In this role, he led initiatives in collaboration with startups, academic institutions, and government agencies, including programs such as the Innovate Everywhere Challenge. Under his leadership, Cisco launched innovation centers in 14 countries. His innovation portfolio at Cisco was valued at approximately $1.1 billion. He also led internal innovation programs, one of which received a Brandon Hall Group Gold Award in 2016.

After leaving Cisco, Goryachev took on advisory roles in AI and innovation strategy at companies including Dell Technologies and Amgen. He contributed to the development of the ISO 56002 standard for innovation management systems through the International Organization for Standardization. He is also a Venture Partner at Interlock Capital.

Goryachev has spoken at Adobe MAX, SXSW, AWS Security Symposium, Google ThinkAI, and World Summit AI, and delivered a TEDx talk titled "Everyone is an Entrepreneur – The Art of Innovation in Everyday Life". In 2016, he spoke at the Commonwealth Club World Affairs of California alongside Maciej Kranz on innovation and digitization in industry.

Writing and publications

Goryachev is the author of Fearless Innovation (2020), published by Wiley.

His writing covers topics such as organizational innovation practices, future of work and education, employee engagement, and adapting to technological change. In 2016, he wrote for Cisco's Innovation Blog outlining seven principles to foster innovation through employee empowerment.

Recognition

In 2019, he was a finalist for the Operational Excellence Outstanding Leader of the Year award by the Business Transformation & Operational Excellence Awards. A 2023 Forbes India profile featured his work in corporate innovation. In 2024, AIM Media House named him among the “Top AI Keynote Speakers to Watch”.
