Alcibíades Roldán

Alcibíades Roldán Álvarez (1859 – 20 June 1947) was a Chilean lawyer and politician who served as a deputy and later in ministerial posts in the early 20th-century.

Early life

Roldán was born in San Fernando in 1859, the son of José Epidacio Roldán and Mercedes Álvarez. He attended the Liceo de San Fernando and the Instituto Nacional, where he enrolled in 1872, before studying law at the University of Chile. He qualified as a lawyer on 8 April 1881.

Alongside his legal career, Roldán worked in journalism and public administration. He contributed to La Época and in 1884 served as director of the National Printing Office and editor of the Diario Oficial. He later served as an adviser to the French firm Schneider y Cía., a councillor of the Caja de Crédito Hipotecario, and a director of the La Francesa insurance company.

Roldán also pursued an academic career. After teaching at the Juan Gutenberg School, he became a substitute professor of commercial law in 1895. From 1896 to 1921, he taught constitutional, positive and comparative law at the University of Chile, returning as professor of constitutional law from 1924 to 1927.

Political career

A member of the Liberal Party, Roldán served as a substitute member of the Chamber of Deputies for Pisagua from 1885 to 1888. He was subsequently elected as a full member for the same constituency for the 1888–1891 term.

Roldán served twice as Minister of Justice and Public Instruction, from 6 September to 25 November 1918 and from 2 July 1923 to 3 January 1924. Following the September 1924 coup, he was appointed Minister of the Interior in the Government Junta headed by General Luis Altamirano, serving from 12 September to 19 December 1924.

He resigned from his university position in 1927 following disagreements with government measures affecting the university system.

Roldán died in Santiago on 28 June 1947.
