Agustín Moreno (Chilean officer)
Agustín Moreno Ladrón de Guevara (24 January 1879 – 17 August 1964) was a Chilean Army general who served as Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army from June to August 1932.
On 14 April 1929, during the presidency of Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, Moreno was appointed General Director of Carabineros de Chile. He held the position until 11 October 1929.
Early life
Moreno was born in Rancagua, Chile, on 24 January 1879.
Military career
Moreno entered the Military Academy on 16 February 1895 and graduated in 1897 with the rank of ensign.
In 1913, he qualified as a staff officer and was sent to Germany as a member of the Chilean Military Commission.
During the First World War, Moreno served as military attaché at the Chilean Embassy in Vienna. Despite Chile's neutrality during the conflict, his posting allowed him to observe developments on the European front.
Moreno returned to Chile in 1919 and subsequently served as an instructor with several Chilean Army infantry regiments.
In 1926, he was appointed deputy chief of the Army General Staff and, concurrently, secretary of the Superior Council of National Defense. He held these positions until 1928.
Commander-in-chief
Moreno attained the rank of major general and was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army on 15 June 1932. His tenure took place during the political instability that followed the establishment of the Socialist Republic of Chile.
He remained commander-in-chief until 2 August 1932, when he was succeeded by Luis Otero Mujica.
Moreno died in his native Rancagua on 17 August 1964, aged 85.
