Abhay (police officer)
Abhay is a former police chief in India. He headed the Narcotics Control Bureau as its Director General(2018-2019), National Police Academy as its 31st Director(2019), and the Odisha State Police as its Director General(DGP)(2019-2021). He has the rare distinction of leading two national police organisations as well as one state police in India.
He joined the elite Indian Police Service in the year 1986 and was allotted the Odisha Cadre. He held various assignments in the Odisha Police including heading its Crime Branch and Special Branch. On central deputation, he served the Bureau of Police Research and Development and the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) . He also served in the Central Reserve Police Force as an Additional Director General. On international deputation, he worked for the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation.
During his stint as the Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau, he led the Indian delegations on drug law enforcement cooperation to Myanmar, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Russia and Indonesia. He represented India at the UN conference on Narcotic Drugs. During the seven year tenure he had in the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI), he headed the Anti Corruption Branch in Odisha, served as the Deputy Inspector General in charge of investigating Bank Frauds and was also the Director of the CBI Academy.
In recognition of his services, he was awarded the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service and Presidents Medal for Distinguished Service.
After his retirement as DGP Odisha, he headed the State Task Force to tackle the drug menace in Odisha and also the Odisha Staff Selection Commission as its Chairman.
