Abbas Ali Mahdi
Abbas Ali Mahdi (born 15 August 1964, Lucknow, India) is an Indian biochemist, who has made contributions in academics, academic administration and research. His father Mahdi Hasan was an Indian Anatomist and his mother was Abida Mahdi.
Education
Dr. Mahdi did his basic schooling, graduation and post-graduation from the Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. Initially he worked on brain involvement in malaria, particularly the role and involvement of macrophages in its pathology. The work is well recognized and cited in international scientific literature.
Career
After briefly working at the Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, Prof. Mahdi joined the Department of Biochemistry, King George Medical College, Lucknow and is now working as a Professor since May 2005 and Head of the Department since May 2010.
Research contributions
Dr. Mahdi’s research interests are free radical biology, natural products, molecular cell biology and metal toxicity. He has carried out studies on use of natural products, Mucuna pruriens and Withania somnifera, for the treatment of male infertility. His team has also worked on use of natural products in the treatment of diabetes, diabetic dyslipidemia and cancer. He has carried out in vivo and in vitro studies to investigate the adverse role of metals like Aluminum and lead. Prof. Mahdi’s researches have been documented in Pubfacts, a knowledge repository with PubMed scientific data, has listed over 200 articles by Dr. Mahdi. He also attends national and international conferences on a regular basis.

Prof. Mahdi has been a visiting Professor to Jiangxi Medical University, Nanchang, Peoples Republic of China and has been the expert and examiner in many foreign Universities and Institutes in China, Mauritius, Malaysia, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran, . He has been invited as the external faculty at a number of National and International Conferences, Workshops, Seminars and Symposium in India and abroad. Prof. Mahdi has organized national and International conferences, symposium and workshops. He is Editor of an International Journal and member of Editorial Board of two international journals and reviewer of more than two dozen national and international journals of repute.
Prof. Mahdi has been involved in many scientific Societies and has been a founder member of three academic National bodies Society for Free Radical Research - India (SFRR - India), Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences & Indian Society for Lead Awareness & Research . He is the Vice President of SFRR - India, Founder Secretary General of IABS, Founder President of InSLAR, President of IABS (2014) and Vice-President, Indian Society for Chronomedicine. He is a Life Member of 14 professional Societies.
Administrative experience
At King George Medical College Prof. Mahdi, apart from doing teaching and research, has also been involved in many other academic and administrative activities of the institution.
Prof. Mahdi has been instrumental in establishing and running the first apex Trauma Centre and New Emergency Complex of the State of Uttar Pradesh at the King George’s Medical University. He was appointed as the Administrative Head of the Trauma Centre and New Emergency Complex King George Medical University on 18 December 2003. Prof. Mahdi is a recipient of “University Appreciation Award” at the 3rd Convocation of the King George’s Medical University. The award was handed over by His Excellency the Governor of Uttar Pradesh Shri T.V. Rajeshwar on 22 January 2007. He has been the Chief Proctor of the King George's Medical University between 2009 to 2014.
