The '''3rd Gawad Urian Awards''' was held in 1979. ''Pagputi ng Uwak, Pag itimng Tagak'' a Celso Ad Castillo film was most awarded film of 3rd Gawad Urian including the Best Picture and Best Director of the year. On the other hand, "Ikaw ay Akin" by [[Ishmael Bernal]] was the most nominated film of the year. Nominated in all the categories except the Best Supporting Actress Award, winning three (3) '' Hindi sa iyo ang mundo, Baby Porcuna'' by Danny L. Zialcita has 10 nominations winning 2 awards including the well deserved win of Beth Bautista as Best Actress beating formidable co-nominees, [[Nora Aunor]] and [[Vilma Santos]] for ''Ikaw ay Akin''. Both Beth Bautista and [[Chanda Romero]] were nominated as Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress of the year. Beth Baustista winning the Best Actress while Chanda Romero won the Best Supporting actress award.

This year, Director and Actor [[Manuel Conde]] was given the Natatanging Gawad Urian or Lifetime Achievement Award
