34th Arkansas Infantry Regiment
The 34th Arkansas Infantry (1861–1865) was a Confederate Army infantry regiment during the American Civil War.
Organization
34th Infantry Regiment was formed August 16, 1862. Colonel William H. Brooks, Lieutenant Colonels T. M. Gunter and James R. Pettigrew, and Major F. R. Earle were in command. The unit was assigned to Fagan's, A.T. Hawthorne's, and Roane's Brigade in the Trans-Mississippi Department. The unit was composed of companies from the following counties:
- Company A —Washington County.
- Company B —Washington County.
- Company C —Washington County.
- Company D —Sebastian County.
- Company E —Crawford County.
- Company F —Benton County.
- Company G —Sebastian County.
- Company H —Washington County. (Contained many former members of the 10th Arkansas Militia Regiment
- Company I —Franklin County. (Much Companies A, B, and C, 7th Arkansas Militia Regiment enlisted in this Company.
- Company K —Washington County.
Battles
The 34th participated in the following actions:
- The Battle of Prairie Grove, AR 7 Dec 1862
- The Battle of Helena, AR 4 Jul 1863
- The Battle of Little Rock, AR 10 Sep 1863.
- The Battle of Jenkins Ferry, AR 30Apr 1864
- The Battle of Ivey's Ford, AR 17 Jan 1865
Surrender
The unit was near Marshall, Texas, along with the 22nd Arkansas Infantry Regiment when word came of the surrender. Rather than March to Shreveport La, as orgionally directed, the two regiments chose to march to Fort Smith, Arkansas and surrendered to General Bussey at that location.
