2026 Uttar Pradesh storm
The 2026 Uttar Pradesh storm was a severe thunderstorm and hailstorm that affected Uttar Pradesh, India, on 13 May 2026. Strong winds, heavy rain, hail and lightning affected 26 districts resulting in extensive destruction and killing at least 111 people.
Impact
The worst-affected districts included Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Sant Ravidas Nagar and Fatehpur. The number of deaths was highest in Prayagraj followed by Mirzapur, Sant Ravidas Nagar, and Fatehpur.
A total of 111 individuals were killed while 72 were injured in the disaster. Furthermore, 170 livestock were killed by the storm, while 227 homes were destroyed across the state. The destruction of houses and electric poles caused several fatalities.
The wind speeds exceeded 130 kilometers per hour in some parts of Uttar Pradesh, which include Prayagraj and Bareilly. The Indian Meteorological Department had issued warnings of weather due to more thunderstorms and rain.
Response
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the officials to speed up the relief process as well as give monetary aid to the families of the dead victims. The state government said that they would give ₹400,000 to each family.
Meteorological conditions
The storm occurred in the pre-monsoon period of May, when the combination of extreme heating and moisture in the atmosphere leads to the formation of thunderstorms in the northern region of India. According to meteorologists, the May 2026 storm formed due to the interplay of various weather systems.
