The 2009 TAC Cup season commenced on 4 April and concluded on 25 September. For the first time the Gold Coast Football Club competed in the competition fielding its junior squad. It was the 18th season of the TAC Cup competition. The season consisted of 20 home and away rounds with each team playing 18 home and away matches and 4 rounds of finals, culminating in the 2009 TAC Cup Grand Final which determined the 2009 TAC Cup premiers. Calder Cannons won the Grand Final for the fifth time in its history and became the most successful club in the competitions history.

The 2009 TAC Cup finals were held at Visy Park, Carlton North. For the second year in a row, the grand final was held as a curtain-raiser to the VFL grand final at Etihad Stadium on the Friday night before the AFL Grand Final
