2006 Brisbane Cessna 206 crash

The 2006 Brisbane Cessna 206 crash occurred on January 2, 2006 in Queensland, Australia. The plane, a single-engine Cessna crashed in a dam near Ipswich, southwest of Brisbane. Five people were killed and two were severely injured in The crash.

The crash

The plane – carrying a pilot, three skydiving instructors, and three students – crashed shortly after takeoff from Brisbane. When police and rescue arrived, they found the plane submerged in the water. Divers recovered four bodies from the plane and the fifth was found on the bank of the dam. It is believed that tethers used in tandem skydiving prevented most of the passengers from escaping.

The two survivors were Brian Scoffell, the owner of Brisbane Skydiving Centre, which operated the plane, and a 27 year old female employee, who was thrown from the wreckage upon impact.

Because light planes do not carry black boxes, the cause of the crash is unknown. However, according to eyewitness, the plane was trailing smoke before it struck a tree and fell into the dam.
