The station's music policy is the greatest hits from the 1950s to the latest releases of today during daytime hours. It plays a much broader mix of music than any commercial stations in the area during the evening including specialist shows focusing on: Bangla, Country, Folk & Jazz.
West Hull Community Radio focuses on local news, community events and sports. The station works on an average 60% music - 40% speech principle with each show having slightly different amounts of these.
In December 2009, the station won Radio Station Of The Year in Yorkshire for 2009 with a potential audience of under 300,000 adults at the Sony radio academy awards.
In 2011, the station became referred to as the 'your new favourite WHCR' following a re-brand including a new more contemporary logo. In August 2011, the then drive-time presenter Pete Mills won the Hull Radio Personality of the Year Award in a three-week online poll carried out by the Hull based telecom company Karoo part of the KCom group beating 10 other radio personalities from the other local commercial and BBC stations including Viking FM.
On 19 October 2012, WHCR moved from the Anlaby Road Studio to a new purpose built studio in the Darley's building on Porter Street.
