Tuned Out is an American documentary-style sitcom about the staff of a small Top 40 radio station. Tuned Out first began as a web-series in late 2009 before branching out onto television in March 2010 on MNN (Manhattan Neighborhood Network) in New York City. Starting September 2011, Tuned Out begins airing on WSLS in Roanoke, Virginia, affiliate of NBC.
Synopsis
The series begins when the staff of a fictional radio station "Good God FM" is bought and flipped to a mainstream format - "Pop FM". Fortunately, the staff retains employment but now must adapt to an unfamiliar format that is a conflict of interest. Tuned Out is set and shot on location in Roanoke, Virginia at real life radio station WFJX.
Intially, the cast consisted of effeminate station manager Lester Higgins (Blair Peyton) and wife, only referred to as "Mrs. Higgins" (Kristin Gainey), who is blind to Lester's homosexual tendencies. Delores Grace (Christie Quackenbush) is the office manager who loudly espouses strict religious views that she herself doesn't follow. Sammy Willis (Bryan Hancock), the station engineer, is never actually seen doing work. He has a gruff exterior but has an extremely sensitive side. At one point, Sammy had an intimate relationship with the station intern Casey (Brianna Bogue); much to the shagrin of Delores who is Casey's aunt. Rounding out the initial cast was Dina Garrett (Amy Graybill). Dina was a big city disc jockey hired to head up the overhaul at the new Pop FM.
After 4 episodes, Amy Graybill abruptly left the show for "personal reasons". The decision was made to kill off her character forcing the show into a new creative direction, resembling a soap opera satire in the vein of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. In episode 5 "Holiday", Mrs. Higgins' free-loading sister Tally (Suzanne Rothgeb) was introduced and moves into the Higgins household; at which point Lester and wife are experiencing marital trouble.
