A by-election won't be held in the federal riding of Edmonton Riverbend in Alberta, Canada, following the decision of incumbent Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux to cross the floor to the Liberal Party of Canada rather than resign.
Announcement
On November 6, 2025, Jeneroux announced that he would resign as Member of Parliament for Edmonton Riverbend in the spring of 2026. He confirmed that he was not crossing the floor to join the Liberal Party and did not provide specific details regarding the reasons for his decision.
Jeneroux said the decision was not an easy one and that his focus would be on his family. He also expressed hope that he would be given the opportunity to address the House of Commons one final time before his departure.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre thanked Jeneroux for his service and wished him and his family well following his decision to step down. Senior members of the Conservative caucus said Jeneroux would remain part of the caucus until his resignation takes effect and was expected to continue voting with the party, including on the government's budget.
