Milbourne Lodge is an independent day preparatory school for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 13. The school takes up to 200 pupils, with the ratio of boys to girls averaging 7:1.
Milbourne's philosophy has always been the pursuit of excellence, in every area of life. For this reason, its reputation as a leader in the education of youngsters has remained virtually unchallenged for over 50 years. It is a feeder to schools such as Eton, Winchester, Harrow, St. Paul's, Westminster and other well known and highly acclaimed institutions of academic excellence.
The Headmaster of Milbourne Lodge is Mr P.C. MacLarnon and the Senior Master is Mr E. Defley.
Curriculum
At Milbourne Lodge English, French, Latin, Greek, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Scripture, Art and IT (Information Technology) are taught throughout the school. Sport is played by all each afternoon.
There is an excellent Art room, and all children take this subject. Art Scholarships are regularly won to Public Schools and competitions are entered for with considerable success.
There is a well-equipped computer room and all pupils study IT (Information Technology) throughout their years at Milbourne Lodge. National competitions are entered for: again, with some success.
Music is important at Milbourne Lodge. Children are encouraged to play a musical instrument, and to join the school orchestra and choir. There are around a dozen visiting music staff. Music Scholarships have been won to Public Schools (including Eton and Winchester).
The ten classes at Milbourne Lodge are divided into two streams. This system enables the children to work with others of their own ability.
It is quite normal for pupils to change from one stream to another during their first three years. After the third year, generally speaking, the teaching is geared to Scholarship work in the 'A' stream (e.g. Greek is introduced at this stage); while in the 'B' stream these last three years are spent on Common Entrance work.
There are many outings for all forms including Geography Field Trips, French Trips and regular theatre outings.
Chess is taught by a visiting Chess Master and a large number of children learn Tennis. Fencing is also available as an extra curricular activity.

Regal Rabbits was a farm in Great Bookham, Surrey, UK that bred rabbits for use in animal experiments.
In 1999 and again on 21 May 2000, over seventy rabbits were removed from the farm by the Animal Liberation Front.
In June 2000 the Close Down Regal Rabbits campaign was launched by animal rights activists. It was one of the shortest animal rights campaigns ever launched, because the farm announced its closure just twelve days later. The owner of the farm, Bill Pitcher, allowed over 1,100 New Zealand White rabbits to be taken and rehomed by animal rights campaigners.
